Personal Property Liens
A lien is a legal claim on personal property up to the amount of past-due child support. Personal property does not include land or real estate.
If a parent who owes support owes more than $600 in past-due child support, the Child Support Program may file liens to collect past-due support on motor vehicles, boats and mobile homes.
Before a lien is placed on a parent's property, the Child Support Program assess the value of the property. Liens are not placed on personal property valued at less than $2,500. The Child Support Program sends a notice by certified mail to the parent who owes support notifying them of intent to place a lien on their property. The notice asks the parent to provide a copy of the property title.
